About the local area

Limekilns lies on the north shore of the Firth of Forth and the settlement here dates back to the 14th century. Lime was indeed burned here and large ruined kilns - protected by the National Trust of Scotland - can be clearly seen in the neighbouring village Charlestown. The harbour was once a bustling fishing port and historically soap was also produced here. Nowadays the harbour is used by mainly leisure craft. The village has some quaint old buildings and it has a wonderful promenade linking the village of Charlestown to the west. There are a number of local eateries, who all offer a great selection food and drinks. There is also a lovely gift shop, a local butcher and cafe. Between the two villages you will find a bowling green, cricket pitch, tennis courts, an active walking club who always welcome visitors to join them on an outing. Dunfermline, only 2 miles away, offers a large selection of shops, restaurants/bars, a theatre, cinema, swimming pool, golf course, historic attractions such as Dunfermline Abbey and more. The Kingdom of Fife is an area rich in things to see and do. Golfers will be spoilt for choice with access to many great local village/town courses and St Andrews, the home of golf, is a 45 minutes drive away and Gleneagles is only 30 minutes. Coastal villages, such as Anstruther, have quaint harbour's, plus a wonderful selection of eateries including award winning fish and chips! Anstruther is home to the Scottish Fisheries Museum and from here you can take a boat trip from the harbour to the Isle of May and visit the world renowned bird sanctuary and nature reserve. You could take a walk on part of the Fife Coastal Path, which runs from North Queensferry in the south, 150km to the Tay Bridge in the north, with historic castles, quaint fishing villages and many beautiful beaches and coves to visit along the way. For the cyclist there is the West Fife Cycle Way and the Millennium Cycle Way allowing you to explore 300 miles along quiet country roads, disused railways and forest tracks, an excellent way to admire the stunning coastline and rolling countryside. With Edinburgh only 17 miles, Stirling 25 miles and Perth 33 miles, Jasmine Cottage is a fantastic location from which to explore the Kingdom of Fife and beyond.
