Return to resultsThe region of Argyll is situated on Scotland's west coast and is home to some of the UK's most beautiful countryside. The region is varied in its landscape, stretching from just outside the city of Glasgow, through the Scottish National Park of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs, taking in the peaks of the Glencoe Mountains and the beauty of 26 inhabited islands off its coastline.
The region is easily accessible, with a good road network and public transport system. There are excellent road, rail and bus links from Glasgow and a number of ferry locations enabling access to the islands. The famous West Highland Rail Line travels through Argyll and is an excellent way to take in the splendid scenery of the region.
The natural beauty and scenery on offer in Argyll makes it popular with outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers. Walking, climbing, fishing, riding and bird, whale and seal watching can all be found here. Its remote beaches, bustling towns and excellent cuisine all draw those wishing to explore Scotland.
There are many towns and villages to explore. Dunoon has traditionally been one of the main seaside resorts for those living in Glasgow and in August, the town holds the world's largest Highland Games, the Cowal Gathering. The Waverley paddle steamer also cruises from the town during the summer season. The picturesque town of Oban is the area's main port and excellent diving and sailing can be found in the area. Other towns to explore include Campbeltown, Rothesay and Helensburgh.
