Return to resultsLocated in the wild Highlands of Scotland, Dunkeld is a small town of pretty stone cottages and local businesses. Dunkeld is a brief 25-minute car journey from the larger town of Perth and is surrounded by the Perthshire Big Tree Countryside.
This historic town has lineage dating back to the first century AD, when it played a vital role in Scottish history as the seat of the Celts. Dunkeld's current layout and aesthetic bears testament to its 18th century re-imagining, when the town was regenerated after the reformation. Dunkeld cathedral stands to the west of the town and has a permanent local history exhibition, in addition to being the home of community life.
Other local attractions include Ossian's Hall, which is an 18th century folly on a rocky outcrop overlooking the breath taking Black Linn waterfall. On the opposite bank of the River Tay on which Dunkeld sits is the picturesque and well-preserved Victorian village of Birnam. Dunkeld is also within driving distance of other historic sites such as Balmoral Castle and Castle Menzies. There are plenty of activities available in Dunkeld and the surrounding areas. The Dunkeld and Birnam golf club offers an 18-hole course overlooking the panoramas of the surrounding countryside and historic town below. The neighbouring Lochs of Craiglush, Lowes and Butterstone offer perfect vistas to explore on long languorous walks and epic hikes.
Dunkeld offers a variety of places to eat and drink. Local independent business range from pubs to cafes and even Indian restaurants and bistros which offer a range of cuisines to satiate the appetites of even the most hungry of tourists.
