There is direct access to the mountains from this property; there are seven Munros (mountains over 3,000ft) in total, with Ben Lawers being Scotland's 10th highest mountain and the closest to the cottage. The charming village of Fortingall is only 2 miles north. It is most famous for the ancient Yew tree in the grounds of the church, believed to be more than 2,000 years old. Some of the houses here have traditional thatch roofs and are full of character. The village lies at the entrance to Glen Lyon, often described as the longest and loveliest Glen in Scotland. Slightly further north is the striking Schiehallion Mountain, also a Munro. Kenmore lies to the east, is only 4 miles away; the village has much to offer with 2 golf courses, horse riding, a quality Courtyard retail outlet and a good selection of water sports. The award winning Scottish Crannog Centre features a unique reconstruction of an early Iron Age loch dwelling, and is well worth a visit. From Fearnan one can travel to Aberfeldy and visit the local deli and farm shop, take a highland safari 4x4 experience and learn about the local wildlife, try your hand at gold panning or call in at Castle Menzies. Aberfeldy has a good range of shops including the Watermill, which has been lovingly restored and is now a bookshop, art gallery and coffee house. On the outskirts of Aberfeldy is the Dewars world of whisky where one can take a tour and sample a glass of "the water of life"! Aberfeldy is well known for outdoor activities with an excellent offering of water sports, an 18 hole golf course and salmon fishing on the River Tay (permits are available locally). To the west, at the opposite end of Loch Tay, is the village of Killin famous for the narrow bridge which crosses the river Dochart and the dramatic, roaring Falls of Dochart. The area is an outdoor enthusiasts paradise where walkers and cyclists can enjoy a large range of easy, moderate and demanding routes through forests, up mountains or along rivers. With numerous lochs all within easy reach, the area also makes for fantastic canoeing, kayaking and fishing. Elm Cottage is ideally located for a holiday in highland Perthshire and the perfect destination for those looking for an active adventure in the great outdoors or a tranquil retreat.
