Return to resultsLocated at the point where the mountains and lochs of the Highlands meet the cities of the lowlands, the historic city of Stirling makes an ideal base to explore both.
The city is pedestrian friendly and compact, yet has plenty of attractions for those staying in the area. Walking through the Old Town is like taking a step back in to the past, with its castle, church, mansions and graveyard.
Stirling Castle is one of Scotland's most popular castles. Home of Mary, Queen of Scots and the Stuart Kings, the castle has a bloody history. There is much to explore here, including the Royal Palace, battlements, kitchens and Royal Chapel.
The city is awash with history. Fans of Braveheart will want to head to the National Wallace Museum and discover more about the local hero, William Wallace. Scotland's most famous battle, Bannockburn, also took place in the area and Bannockburn Heritage Centre offers visitors the chance to look out over the battlefield and see the iconic statue of Robert the Bruce.
Stirling Jail gives the opportunity to step back in time and experience life behind bars in a 19th century prison. Adults will enjoy the spectacular views from the Jail's rooftops whilst children can take part in a beastie hunt.
Stirling is also a modern city. Its shopping centres and arcades make it a regional shopping destination, whilst its cinemas, theatres and art galleries give it a truly cosmopolitan feel. There is much to explore in the surrounding area, including the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park, the historical Dunblane and the Highland villages of Tyndrum and Crianlarich.
