Unusual places of interest abound. Just 10 minutes drive away is the Cairgorm Reindeer Centre, where visitors can encounter Britain’s only herd of free ranging reindeer. Husky trail rides through the foothills of the mountains also offer a memorable and unique day out. The region is also noted for its birdlife and the nearby RSPB nature reserve at Boat of Garten is famous for its Ospreys which nest locally. The Spey valley is also home to some of Scotland’s most famous malts and the "whiskey trail" is always popular with visitors - there is a local distillery also within walking distance that offers tours. With challenging Munros and the superb water sport lochs of Insh and Morlich, the choice of outdoor sports is almost unlimited. For the less energetic there is a funicular railway that runs up the side of the Cairgorm mountain range. Aviemore has an excellent selection of restaurants, bars, cafes and interesting local shops and with Inverness just 30 minutes drive away; it is an ideal location for exploring the heart of the Highlands.
