Ardbeg is a single-storey cottage set in its own delightful garden and enjoys magnificent views across open countryside. Situated on the owners’ 600-acre working sheep and beef farm, it has miles of lovely walks through the surrounding countryside, taking in hills, lochs and river along the way. Ardbeg is completely secluded within its own landscaped and picturesque gardens, yet is easily accessible and just a 10-minute drive to the centre of Thurso. The cottage has a very spacious, bright and modern kitchen/dining room, with built-in appliances and a large dining table for up to eight guests. The living room is a real delight. With a feature wood burner and large picture windows that drink in the amazing views across open hills and countryside, it is a wonderful place to relax after a day’s sightseeing or outdoor activities. A small conservatory off the hall leads out to the gardens, with outdoor dining facilities. This is an ideal cottage for families, couples and groups who appreciate a very good standard of accommodation in a quiet countryside location.
The adjoining land is a haven for wildlife, encouraged by the farming owners, who have created an official nature reserve, with loch and walks recognised by the RSPB. Roe deer graze in the fields and numerous birds can be spotted in the area. There is a lovely path adjoining the cottage that meanders through the countryside to the River Forss. Permits to fish for trout and salmon are available in season. The coast around this area is also renowned for its bird and sea life. Puffins, great skua, otters, seals, dolphins and whales are all seen here.
The town of Thurso, just 4 miles away, is steeped in history. Built by the Vikings and added to over the centuries, it now offers visitors a fascinating mix of ancient and modern. The Caithness Horizons visitor centre is well worth a visit. Local facilities also include a swimming pool, leisure centre, cinema, boating lake, quad biking, sailing and a good selection of shops, pubs, cafés and restaurants. There is a wide variety of sports and activities in the region. The renowned surfing beaches of Dunnet and Thurso play host to the world championship surfing competition. There are many excellent golf courses in the region, together with horse riding, fishing, sailing and cycling. Beach 4 miles. Shop, pub and restaurant 4 miles.
