About the local area

From Gairloch harbour, you can choose from a variety of boat trips, which include whale and dolphin watching, to sea angling, and there are pontoons available for those who wish to bring their own boat. The area is a wild life enthusiast’s paradise. Sea eagles are common to the region and otters seals and superb array of birdlife can be seen in the area. There are a number of excellent sea and wildlife boat trips that can be booked from the harbour, as well as sea fishing trips and excursions. There is also a wonderful voyage out to the uninhabited Shiants islands (the only trip from mainland Scotland to these remote islands) to view the millions of nesting sea birds, spotting whales and dolphins on the way. The excellent nine hole golf course is just a few minutes along the road and is situated beside a golden sandy beach. Other popular activities include pony trekking in the nearby Flowerdale Glen, bird watching. The world famous Inverewe Gardens at Poolewe and the Gairloch Heritage Museum are both worth a visit. The Gairloch Leisure Centre provides many sporting activities and there is an indoor swimming pool at Poolewe (6 miles). Gairloch also has a good choice of pubs and restaurants, which specialise in sea food dishes and other local fare, the nearest one being the  The Old Inn, just a five minute walk from the cottage. There are also many small coffee/craft shops in the area. With unspoilt sandy beaches and superb scenery, this is a superb holiday location for all ages.
