Alder Cottage is a delightful single storey cottage set in its own private garden grounds amidst stunning scenery just 5 miles from the Isle of Skye.  Once a traditional croft cottage the property has undergone a complete transformation and extension and now offers bright and spacious accommodation in a spectacular Highland setting.  The large picture windows drink in the amazing views of hills and mountains.  The spacious lounge has a feature open fireplace made from local Applecross stone that acts a focal point.  A good sized kitchen / dining room in the new extension looks out across the lovely gardens that surround the property .  There is also a superb old stone barn in the grounds which has been beautifully converted into a “games room” with a variety of activities provided, including table tennis, snooker and darts. Alder Cottage is situated in a quiet no-through road that meanders through the hills, over a small bridge with tumbling burn and onto Avernish, the historic site of a ‘clearance’ village; there are superb walks direct from the cottage.  It is easily accessible and just a few minutes drive to the Isle of Skye and to some of the most dramatic and amazing scenery in the whole of the Western Highlands.

About the local area

The surrounding area offers a wealth of activities, places of interest and historic sites. The fairy tale castle of Eilean Donan, enchantingly situated on a promontory in the loch and accessed by a small causeway, is right on the doorstep. A spectacular route takes you past this famous castle and through the amazing mountain range known as the Five Sisters of Kintail and beautiful Glen Shiel, before reaching the shores of Loch Ness. The charming sea port of Kyle of Lochalsh, gateway to the Isle of Skye, is just 5 miles away.  A glass-bottomed boat runs from here to view the sea life close to hand.  The Gavin Maxwell Otter Centre at Kyleakin is well worth a visit and numerous distilleries and ancient historical sites are all within easy reach.  Armadale Castle, seat of the Clan Donald, with its superb gardens and grounds set in 20,000 acres, also houses a fascinating museum and is easily accessible in the south of the island.  Boat trips to see the seals, dolphins and whales run from Armadale harbour.  The ferry also sails from here across to Mallaig on the mainland. This part of island is known as the garden of Skye and is renowned for its superb walking, climbing, bird-watching and beautiful fauna and flora. It also offers easy access to a wealth of historical sites and places of interest.  The picture post card village of Plockton is also close by, made famous as the venue for the television series Hamish Macbeth. With its picturesque flower-filled gardens, little winding streets and pretty cottages lining the foreshore it easy to see why it has also become a haunt for artists in recent years.  With its close proximity to the Isle of Skye and the mountains, hills, lochs and coastline of the Western Highlands, this lovely cottage makes an ideal base for exploring this spectacular region of Scotland.
