North Skye is steeped in history and full of interesting places to visit. Talisker Distillery is just a short drive, and just 10 minutes away is Dunvegan Castle, the oldest inhabited castle in Scotland and seat of the Clan MacLeod since the 13th century. Visitors are welcome to wander the beautiful grounds and also take a boat to encounter the seals closer to hand. There is also a renowned coral beach nearby. In the other direction lies the pretty harbour town of Portree, known as the ’capital’ of Skye. Set around its natural harbour, with spectacular hills and mountains beyond, Portree is a quintessentially picturesque fishing village. Brightly painted cottages cluster round the active harbour where some of the finest fish restaurants can be found. There is also an excellent selection of local shops, pubs and other restaurants. Travelling a few miles further north the pretty sea port of Uig has a number of excellent pubs and restaurants, a local bakery, pottery and is also the home of the Isle of Skye brewery. From here one can take a day ferry trip to the Outer Isles. Skye is renowned for its climbing and walking and , within easy reach of the MacLeod’s Tables and close to the Cuillin Mountain range, the cottage is ideally located for this. There are also lovely walks and trails direct from the cottage. For horse riding enthusiasts, the local riding stables just a few yards away will be a strong attraction and fishing, golf, canoeing and sailing are also available in the area.
