Description

Puffin Cottage is a self-contained ground floor cottage situated close to the edge of the sea in the charming coastal village of Gardenstown. This traditional cottage has been completely refurbished inside. The bright, contemporary interior offers the height of open-plan living whilst retaining many attractive original features such as deep silled windows and traditional front door.

The main living area is a real delight. Bright red sofas contrast with the white-painted walls, with charming paintings by the artist/owner adding a unique touch. The kitchen area is well-equipped with integral appliances and provides plenty of room for up to four. There is a large bedroom at one end of the cottage. A small corridor leads through from the main living area to a superb fully tiled bathroom with spacious shower.  Situated right on the edge of the sea, at the bottom of a small winding lane that leads down from the cliffs, Gardenstown oozes charm and tranquillity. It has the allure and ambience of a Cornish fishing village, but without the crowds!  The small winding streets, picturesque harbour and old stone cottages seem untouched by time.  It really is the quintessential seaside village and Puffin Cottage is just a stone’s throw from the water’s edge. The spectacular views, headland and bays have been the setting for a number of television programmes and the village has become a haven for artists.  Sandy beaches and rocky coves make it an ideal location for all ages.

The owner is also happy to provide a catering service for visitors, cooking on an ad hoc basis by prior arrangement. Even Christmas dinner can be provided; ideal for couples wishing to have a relaxing Christmas break by the sea with all the stress and strain taken care of!  A romantic retreat.

About the local area

Dolphins and seals are regular visitors and the area is renowned for its wealth of sea-birds. Even the occasional whale has been spotted close to shore.  There is plenty to see and do in the area. Golf, fishing, riding, sailing, canoeing, surfing, walking and cycling are all regular local pastimes. Gardenstown also hosts a number of special events and activities during the summer months. One of the best ways to explore the myriad of pretty fishing villages along this Moray coast is by local bus.  An excellent service runs regularly and one can stop off, wander the network of small lanes, stroll along the seafronts and enjoy lunch by one of the many picturesque harbours before taking the next bus along the coast.
There are numerous castles and distilleries on the renowned ‘Whisky and Castle Trails”.  The nearby town of Macduff has an excellent aquarium centre, and some of the finest championship golf courses are within easy reach.  Wonderful coastal walks abound – there is a lovely walk direct from the property along the shoreline to the pretty seaside village of Crovie. The historic town of Banff is also within easy driving distance.

Zoe  Hall - August 2012

Puffin Cottage is a delight! My fiancé and I stayed for a week and wished for longer. Everything about the cottage is superb and we would seriously consider returning at some point in the future. Being the first to holiday in this newly restored cottage meant that everything was immaculate, tastefully appointed and decorated, from the bathroom having limestone tiles and full double walk in shower (amazing shower too), the open plan lounge/diner/kitchen having red and white themes, new shiny cupboards, easy sofas, digital TV, a great sized bedroom with an o’so comfy king size, plenty of storage for clothes and our personal favourite a sparkly red rug. The cottage has a great very private patio space in the garden just outside the front door, overlooking the headland, something which we found many of the other similar properties didn’t have. We barbequed every night, serenaded by the waves and the seagulls, sheer bliss! Being next door to the quirky Gardenstown Arms was a treat and not a problem, we didn’t hear any noise and it was great to be able to nip for the odd pint. We didn’t go anywere in the car for the first few days as Gardenstown beach and harbour is an absolute gem, there are also so many coastal walks and local bays to while away in, such as Crovie, Pennan and Cullykhan Bay was a picnic favourite. Be aware there is no parking immediately outside the property (this is the same for most in Gardenstown). This didn’t pose a problem though, there was always plenty of room for parking along the Main Street about 50yds from the cottage. The owner was extremely welcoming and has created a fabulous holiday getaway…you will not be disappointed! I'll also upload a few photos, see attached. It's just a shame I didn't take more of the inside of your cottage, wish I had! Thanks again for what made a fabulous getaway for us both. The rest we needed!
