Ballater is situated on the banks of the famous river Dee. Just 6 miles from Balmoral, it became established in Victorian times and is still noted for its royal connections, with many businesses displaying the Royal warrants as testimony. This charming and thriving village is known as the jewel in the crown of Royal Deeside and certainly lives up to its reputation. It has an excellent selection of interesting and unusual specialist shops, from local crafts to antiques, galleries, clothes shops and much more. There is an exceptional number of good quality restaurants, inns and cafes, all within a short walk of the property, including a renowned 3AA rosette restaurant. Set in the Cairngorm National Park - the largest national park in Britain - this magnificent area is renowned for its superb mountain scenery, historic towns and villages, such as Braemar and Aboyne, and its  incredible range of outdoor activities. There are plenty of easy walks within close proximity, where local wildlife such as deer and red squirrels can be spotted. Climbing, hill walking, mountain biking, cross country and downhill skiing, horse riding, canoeing, sailing and gliding are all enjoyed in the immediate area. Situated on the river Dee, the area is also renowned for its salmon fishing. Permits to fish can be obtained locally. Walking enthusiasts are spoilt for choice, with the majestic Lochnagar, one of Scotland's finest mountains, right on the doorstep. Ballater also has a fine 18 hole golf course which is open to visitors. There are a number of special events throughout the season, including highland games, a popular Walking Week and in August Ballater plays host to Victoria Week. Three of the five Scottish ski centres (Cairngorm, The Lecht and Glenshee) are all contained within the Cairngorm National Park. Places of historic interest abound. The castles of Balmoral, Craigevar and Crathes are all within easy reach and the Whisky Trail encompasses many of the renowned Highland malts that originate in the region, the nearest being Lochnagar Distillery, which is open to visitors.

Tangly Cottage was welcoming, cosy and well equipped with everything we needed.

J A Bennett - April 2013

Very comfortable cottage with everything provided. Friendly owners.

M A Fletcher - October 2012

The cottage was very comfortable and cosy, and well equipped with towels etc. The Kitchen had all the facilities required and plenty of cupboard space in the bedroom. Nice garden with table and chairs for sitting out in summer. Ideal for two people, and would use the place again if we go to that area in Scotland.
