Description

Covesea Cottage is a quintessential seaside cottage perched right on the edge of the sea overlooking Kyleakin harbour with hills beyond. Originally a fisherman's  cottage, this pretty detached stone cottage has been completely renovated and extended in recent years. It now provides bright, spacious and modern accommodation for four in a superb setting. The main living area is open plan. The lounge area has deep leather sofas, an open fire and a warm, homely ambience. The kitchen/dining area is separated by a low dividing wall with ship's wheel providing an interesting focal point, in keeping with the surroundings. Large picture windows look out across the bay. With small fishing boats and craft bobbing in the foreground, the remnants of an historic castle on a wee island in view, and hills and mountains beyond, it is a constantly moving picture - much better than any television can provide! There are two good sized bedrooms and a modern bathroom with Jacuzzi bath. The cottage gardens are a real delight. The owner is an enthusiastic and talented gardener and this is reflected in the lovely shrubs and plants that are interspersed amongst the shingle. South facing and sheltered, it is an ideal spot to sit and admire the views.

About the local area

Kyleakin is just across the water from Gavin Maxwell's island of Eilean Ban. Famed for his writings about his beloved otters, in particular his autobiography Ring of Bright Water, Kyleakin is home to the Bright Water museum, and otters are regularly spotted from the cottage garden on the shoreline, and sometimes even venture into the garden. There is a wonderful array of other  wildlife in the area with frequent sightings of seals and pine martin, as well as occasional dolphins, porpoises, basking sharks and Minke whales; together with  numerous seabirds. It is just a short walk from the cottage to the centre of Kyleakin village. This charming traditional fishing village has an excellent selection of pubs, cafes and restaurants, together with small shops and post office. There is a lovely working harbour where small craft and canoes can be launched. The surrounding area offers a wealth of activities, places of interest and historic sites. Just a  short drive away is Armadale Castle, seat of the Clan Donald, with its superb gardens and grounds set in 20,000 acres. It also houses a fascinating museum. Boat trips to see the seals, dolphins and whales run from Armadale harbour. The ferry also sails from here across to Malliag on the mainland. This part of island is known as the garden of Skye and is renowned for its superb walking, climbing, bird watching and beautiful fauna and flora. Just across the Skye bridge is the fairy tale castle of Eilean Donan, enchantingly situated on a promontory in the loch and accessed by a small causeway, is right on the doorstep. A spectacular route takes you past this famous castle and through the amazing mountain range known as the Five Sisters of Kintail and beautiful Glen Shiel, before reaching the shores of Loch Ness. The charming sea port of Kyle of Lochalsh, gateway to the Isle of Skye, is just 2 miles away.

What our customers say about Covesea Cottage

Steve & Di -

A wonderful cottage in a beautiful location! Thanks for the 'welcome' and the wine it was appreciated. We will certainly be back!!

Tanya & Luke, Germany -

Thank you for the wonderful welcome and the chilled bottle in the fridge. We found the best self catering cottage with every facility/comfort that we have stayed in. Every day we undertook tours on the beautiful Isle and it was a pleasure to come back in Covesea Cottage. We enjoy every morning and evening the wonderful view and the calm. Many thanks for a lovely holiday, we enjoy every minute and hope to be back next year.

Jolanda, The Netherlands -

We had a great time. I loved the cottage and the flowers and birds. We did a lot of walking. One day sun, one day rain. Beautiful week! Thanks for everything.

Helen & Chris -

We have only been here five days but instantly felt at home in the cottage. The picture window, gardens and views are inspirational. The photos on the web site do not do the place justice. Saw more varieties of birds here in 5 minutes than we do in a week at home. The teatime spent watching a seal periodically pop up in the harbour was captivating but the 4 otters we saw whilst crossing the nearby bridge on way back to house at dusk was totally magical. The 'Misty Isle' boat trip from Elgol was well worth the money - saw golden eagle, seals and various coastal birds. Navigating the road to Elgol was an adventure in itself. Thank you for lovely house/place to stay.

Mike, Dawn, Grace, Tom And Oscar -

Covesea is a lovely, warm, welcoming home from home. Thank you for the lovely welcome treats. Very much appreciated after our long journey. We have had a brilliant time exploring this beautiful island and don't want to leave. It has been wonderful to just sit and watch the birds and boats. Can't wait to come back.

Jim, Susan & Emma -

Another lovely visit to Covesea. The weather has been lovely - 5 days were gorgeous. Lovely local walks for us and our 5 month old dog. Hope to come back again in the near future as pace of life is so much slower and relaxed here - love it.

Henderica The Netherlands -

What a beautiful cottage in one of the most beautiful regions of Scotland. We have been feeding the birds. Thank you for your hospitality and maybe see you again.

G Tooke -

Enjoyed stay in cottage and holiday in Skye

Gill, Barbara  & Lulu (The Dog) -

A wonderful get away from it all. Covesea is such a welcome retreat from the frenzy of modern life. Here one had time to stand and admire the beauty of the surroundings and the abundance of wild life. Here if feels as if time almost stands still. The cottage itself was outstanding for its cleanliness and comfort. Our every need having been anticipated and catered for in great detail. We will certainly recommend the cottage to all our friends. With thanks for your thoughtfulness and attention to detail.

Mr I Cooper -

This cottage is very beautiful and has an amazing view which was very enjoyable when we sat down to dinner. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and definitely would like to stay here again. The walks were great, the scenery was beautiful and this cottage was very comfortable.

Gileen & John Payne -

All things bright and beautiful. Thank you.

Glenn & Vicky -

Thank you so much for giving us the opportunity to stay in your lovely home. This is our first visit to Skye but not to Scotland, it has passed all our expectations. Like a lot of people who have visited here all we could keep saying was Wow! And awesome! The weather the first week was great so we visited lots of places, Plockton is a must. We have had the chance to go right round the island in all weathers but it was still great on a rainy day. Thank you again it has felt like home from home we will definitely be back one day.

Mrs M Watson -

What a wonderful homely cottage. We felt at home when we arrived, everything so fresh and clean. We have thoroughly enjoyed staying here for the week an even though it rained every day, we managed the superb local walks. The ever changing moods of the sea and the sky from the windows have been fascinating. The beautiful colourful garden with all the many visiting birds at the feeders held our continued attention. Also, thank you so much for the welcome treats. This is a precious place.

Mr & Mrs T Bridges -

What a wonderful week we have had. The long journey getting here was worth it. A trip to see the seals is a must. Covesea has been most comfortable, the views a treat. Many thanks for the surprise treats and we wish the next occupants as nice a week as we have had.

Mrs G  Riley -

Wonderful location, cottage very welcoming, owner very helpful.

David, Alice,  Bethany & Amie -

What a lovely surprise we received when we arrived. This cottage is so much more than we expected. Thank you for making this such a comfortable place and thanks for the arrival pack. The girls loved the shortbread whilst mummy loved the wine. Lots of birds visiting and was most grateful of the bird book so we could identify who was eating the crumbs. Places visited including many highlights such as Fairy Glen, Dunvegan Castle, Eilean Ban Island, Elgol, best trip to Loch Coruisk via boat (where the girls where allowed to steer "Heather Grace" the boat, never seen such a wide smile on their faces. The highland cows in Duirinsh over the bridge, Fairy Pools and the Quiraing walk to the needle. Had some lovely meals at the Old Inn in Carbost, Sligachan Hotel bar and Harry's in Kyleakin. Thanks for everything.

Sheila & Brian, Knaresborough &  Denise & Rob, Leicester -

Who needs the Alps or the Sierras when you can have Skye!! We've had a wonderful week despite the weather and eventually gave up how many times one of us said "beautiful". After long days exploring Skye and the West Coast of Skye and the mainland, it was great to come back to Covesea Cottage. We felt welcome and comfortable and never grew tired of watching the harbour and the birds. We only had a few meals out (Harry's Cafe) for lunch and the 3 chimneys for dinner, because the well stocked kitchen has been like being at home. We loved visiting Talisker Distillery, The Three Chimneys Restaurant, Armadal, Attadale, Plockton, but we always came "home" to Covesea with its generous touches, books, DVD's, cotton wool buds, tissues etc. the things that make a home from home.

S Messenger -

A wonderful cottage with amazing views across the harbour. Very high equipment standards. A perfect location for a great break on the Isle of Skye!

C Aspinall -

enjoyed our stay, cottage and location very good, would use your web site again.

Steve &  Jackie -

Wow!! After a twelve hour journey to get here we arrived exhausted. We parked and took our luggage from the car then we saw the view! "Wow" we kept saying, then we let ourselves into the cottage itself, "wow" we said some more! Honestly this was exactly what we both wanted and needed in a holiday. Everything we needed was here and all so welcoming, like visiting someone you know . The garden an absolute delight and if you get out at the right time of day you can sometimes miss the midges, on those occasions you have to come in, no probs just sit by the window and that view! Welcome pack most welcome and thank you so much for that. A walk across the bridge is well worth it, about 2.5 miles but beautiful scenery to take photos of. We got a bus back, but for those with a bit more energy than us will be fine. Plockton is not far and well worth a visit, nice lunch in the "Plockton Hotel", Kyle is not very big but has an assortment of shops including a chemist, co-op and a few gift shops. Portree though has a wide range of Shops and a cream tea in the Granary is well worth a visit. Feeding the birds and watching them has also been a delight each morning. So many castles so little time, visit as many as you can. Castle Urquhart is amazing.

Colin & Janette Aspinall -

How lucky are we! Fortunate to have chosen such a lovely cottage in which to spend our week's holiday and blessed with such wonderful weather. The cottage has been a delight. Thank you so much for all the welcome gifts which came as a lovely surprise. We have really enjoyed sitting in the garden marvelling at the lovely scenery and the ever-changing picture of the harbour and the working boats. A very restful, peaceful and enjoyable holiday. Thank you so much.

Christine & Ian Largs -

Most wonderful place to stay. Beats most other self catering places by far. Beautiful view, very quiet and had great sleep on every night, very relaxing and top marks for cleanliness 5 star plus. Everything supplied, so know not to bring too much next time. Great location to get out around Skye & Kyle District and always enjoyed returning to "Seacove". Felt so comfortable and many thanks for the "surprises and welcome package". Garden is a delight and would win prizes I am sure. A tapestry of colour. Thank you.

P Brannan -

We absolutely loved Covesea Cottage. The owners had obviously tried to think of everything a holiday-maker could need, including welcoming goodies, and we loved the view from the sitting room window and the beautiful garden. We would certainly return there.

I have had many self catering cottage s over the years and I can truly say Covesea is the best to date. Everything you could wish for, very well equipt and because of bad luck with the weather we were so thankful for heating that kept the whole house warm. I've had many happy visits to Skye and now I've found a cottage with everything. I hope to be back soon. Many thanks for all the extras.

James Hermit -

Excellent location and very comfortable cottage. Very well equipped with a very nice welcome pack left by the owner. Although the weather was a bit variable we still found plenty to do. We will definitely return.

K Brough -

Lovely cottage with EVERYTHING that we needed. Very impressed.

S J Gurney -

Wonderful cottage with stunning views over the harbour, able to look out the large full width lounge windows, what ever the weather, and time of day. It was a wonderful place to relax, and would reccomend "Covesea" to anybody wishing a holiday on Skye. Superb!! Many Thanks. Steve Gurney. 19.02.13

We drove through rain, we drove through snow covered fells and mountains and then we arrived to a warm, cosy, friendly cottage with the most amazing views from the front windows. We walked, we explored, we sat, we watched and were captivated. We will be back I'm sure as we didn't want to leave. We saw eagles and we saw otters. We booked online, on a sunny day last year and looked forward to our adventure, we didn't expect it to be as good as it had been. A wonderful Isle, a wonderful base, a wonderful week.

The cottage is wonderful. We had a really great, relaxing holiday. We really enjoyed the views and looking at the wildlife. We had plenty of walks and a few drinks at the end of the day in Saucy Marys Bar. Very friendly people and good food served the

S Mellers -

Warm, homely, beautiful view, good location. Great great property! Stay here, you won't regret it.

P Benson -

The cottage was lovely and warm, with great views and in a brilliant location. We have fallen in love with Skye...

Brilliant cottage with everything you could need. Fantastic time for our week here with brilliant, sunny warm weather. Great base to see Skye. All in all a great break, relaxing and stress free. Enjoyed by all four of us. Particularly enjoyable as we knew we'd got such a lovely cottage to return to each evening. Who said it was wet and cold in Skye.

J Milne -

The cottage was beautiful, with a welcoming interior and lovely garden with a view to the local harbour. The double-bed was very comfortable, and the house as a whole very snug & warm. If we return to Skye in the future, we would very happily stay at Covesea Cottage again.

J Worsdale -

The pictures do not do this cottage justice, it is fabulous, there were lots of extras we were not expecting and it was so clean. I cannot praise it highly enough

Tim, Lesley &  Rossi -

Great cottage, home from home, immediately felt comfortable. Hopefully return soon.

Mrs S  Moorey -

We have had a wonderful week here, we love the cottage and the garden is heaven, have enjoyed the birds and the boats. As the weather was brilliant we went out everyday to different parts of Skye. It is the first time we have stayed on Skye and we would certainly come again. Thank you for the welcome pack. Best holiday cottage we have rented so far.

We have had a wonderful week exploring the Isle of Skye. We had some beautiful unexpected weather for most of the week and the only rainy day that came was Friday. Unfortunately for us we had booked to go kayaking that day. Despite the weather it was a fantastic experience and one we would recommend. We would like to thank you for allowing us to stay in your beautiful cottage. It catered for all our needs and the unexpected wine, tea was a very pleasant surprise offer our long journey up, we settled in lovely

M Kenneway -

Wonderful property in a magical location. It feels like a real home.

W W Brown -

A beautiful cottage. We will be back.

M Yanetta -

The cottage was superb! So well equipped and decor was lovely. Everything very comfortable and well presented. the views were outstanding and the location so peaceful but with easy access to all that we wanted to do. I would highly recommend this cottage...it had it all!!

G Mcqueen -

Very comfortable cottage.

Mrs J  Villa -

Lovely clean well equipped cottage everything we could possibly need. Really enjoyed the view from the window or garden weather permitting watching the boats coming and going. After long days touring the Island we looked forward to getting back to the cottage at night. Bramble (Cocker Spaniel) enjoyed plenty of walks.

Paul & Gayle Mcqueen -

Fabulous Cottage. Fabulous Holiday. We stayed at the cottage for 5 nights with our two children aged 6 and 2. The cottage is lovely and very comfortable. So many lovely touches and everything you could need. The view is fabulous and our little boy lovely exploring on the shore and watching the wildlife. A walk across the Skye Bridge was truly breathtaking and visits to Plockton, Armadale and Kylerhea - stunning. This was our first visit to Skye and it certainly won't be our last. Thank you for the flexibility! Hope to return.

S Taylor -

A little corner of heaven.

Michael & Sharon Taylor -

A little bit of heaven - loved the garden house, view, wildlife, peace. I've felt at home as soon as we walked in - This is the best rented we have been in yet - deft be back possible short stay. We don't want to go. Wishing you all good things. We hope you get your home back to yourselves soon!

Emmett & Carolyn Sheehan -

Very reluctant to leave this fabulous spot to return to New Zealand. Having great difficulty dragging my husband away as he is a boating and fishing nut. We have had a wonderful week here and may return one day. All the best.

Mr  Morgan -

Everything was wonderful! The view was fabulous, the garden is amazing, the cottage is just lovely. Thanks for the welcome. We'll remember Skye forever.

Mr & Mrs  Saddleworth -

Perfect! The cottage & gardens are a credit to the owners. The views from the cottage are stunning. We saw deer near Skye Bridge, seals in the bay. Best of all we watched otters playing under Skye Bridge. The cottage furnishings are 1st class, plus we had lovely weather. We have enjoyed 20 years of cottage holidays and this is "Simply The Best!"

M Magirr -

Best equipped cottage we have stayed in

Mrs  Magirr -

Despite disappointing weather, we have spent an enjoyable and relaxing week here. The cottage has everything you could wish for and the views are delightful. We had some good walks- Glenbrittle, Leitir Fura, Point of Sleat and the Elgol Peninsula which was the highlight of the week. We went to Plockton Shores and would endorse the recommendation - wonderful food and friendly service. The village is worth a visit itself. All in all, an excellent holiday.

Louise & Richard Alfreton -

We loved the view from the window and the lovely garden. Leaving the car behind we walked over the bridge to Kyle Lochalsh and went on the glass bottomed boat. As well as the seals we enjoyed seeing life below sea level. The cottage is well equipped and a real home from home. So quiet as well (thought the sounds of the harbour and seabirds would wake us - such a good nights sleep I started snoring and ended up banished to the downstairs bedroom! Would love to stay here again, but at the same time we hope that everything works out for you - we felt guilty at taking some bodies beautiful home. Thank you and best wishes.

Mrs C  Whitelaw -

We were overwhelmed with the beauty and well presented and equipped cottage. The cottage is very relaxing and comfortable and it far exceeded our expectations. We loved the ever changing views out of the picture windows and the coal fire very much. Our dog loved sitting watching the birds out the window.
