The immediate area is a haven for wildlife and heaven for nature lovers. Golden eagles and rare sea eagles nest nearby. Seals, otters and even the odd Minke whale are seen in the bay. There are superb walks direct from the property, from easy hill walking, a trip to the stunning coral beach or a more serious climb up the Cuillin Ridge; there is something for all ages and abilities. The owner can also provide good quality mountain bikes for visitor's use, free of charge. Whilst The Sheiling is situated in a rural area, it is not isolated. The nearby small town of Dunvegan is famous for its castle, seat of the Clan MacLeod since the 13th century and now the oldest inhabited castle in Scotland. Visitors are welcome to explore the beautiful grounds, from where visitors can take a boat trip to see the seals in the Loch closer to hand. Dunvegan also provides a good selection of local shops, as well as a pub, restaurant and cafe.
The renowned Three Chimneys Restaurant (rated one of the top 100 restaurants and possessing three AA Red Rosettes) is just one mile away from the property. The owner of The Sheiling is a highly qualified agriculturalist and grows vegetables for this restaurant. He also runs short training courses on how to grow your own vegatables, with a bias towards beginners and those with limited space, such as container grown vegetables. Visitors at The Sheiling are welcome to combine their holiday with a bespoke training course to suit their particular requirements with further information available at www.thesheilingskye.co.uk
