The surrounding area is a haven for wildlife and is a bird watcher's paradise. A recorded site for Corncrakes is situated directly opposite the cottage and the Sea eagles at Waternish are two of only forty two pairs in Scotland. Golden eagles are also resident in the area and local buzzards wheel overhead. In the nearby traditional fishing village of Stein there is an excellent seafood restaurant and a friendly village pub which also serves food - full of character, it is the oldest pub on Skye. Boat trips run from Stein to West Point and Waternish Point to view the whales, dolphins and seals that frequent these waters. For those who truly like to get away from it all, it is also possible to become a 'castaway' for a day on the nearby island of Isay. There is a wealth of outdoor activities right on the door step. Hill walking, climbing, sailing, canoeing and kayaking are all regular pastimes. The local riding stables offer superb pony trekking over open moors and hills. There is even a local diving centre based on Waternish peninsula which offers professional diving trips ( subject to avilability - early booking in advance of arrival is advisable) to explore the crystal clear waters teaming with an abundance of marine life. Cycling and forest walk trails abound. Take a bike ride direct from the cottage through pretty forest tracks to nearby Greshornish Hotel for lunch. The owner of the cottage has provided mountain bikes free for holiday makers use. The local area is steeped in history. Explore the ruins of nearby Trumpen Church - the site of the last battle between the MacDonalds and MacLeods - take a walk through a ruined village, ancient brochs, or head to the lighthouse to experience the amazing and dramatic seascape. Woodburn Cottage is bright and spacious with beautifully co ordinated rooms and large picture windows which maximise the amazing views across the sea; it offers a superb base from which to enjoy the unique and unspoilt Waternish peninsula and the whole of the beautiful Isle of Skye.
