The attractive village of Drumnadrochit, renowned as the 'home of Nessie', the Loch Ness monster, has two interesting museums offering scientific studies on the various sightings, with photographic illustrations. There are a number of excellent inns and restaurants, including the Fiddler's Highland Restaurant, voted "Scotland's best Malt Whisky Bar" for the last three years in a row. Just outside the village is the stunningly beautiful Urquhart Castle, which sits on a promontory jutting out into Loch Ness, Heading west, the wild beauty of Glen Affic, one of the most beautiful and scenic Highland glens, has wonderful walks, with waterfalls, old Caledonian forests and amazing flora and fauna. Outdoor enthusiasts are simply spoilt for choice. The property is 5 minutes from the Great Glen Way, a spectacular 73 mile walking and cycling route which runs from Fort William in the west through to Inverness, taking in numerous historical sites along the way. There is an excellent local riding centre which offers treks through the Highland glens as well as lessons for less experienced riders. Golf, fishing, canoeing, sailing, mountain biking, hill walking and climbing are also available in the area. There is a stunning drive along the shores of Loch Ness to the nearby village of Fort Augustus, which is well worth a visit. Its focal point is a dramatic and picturesque series of locks which provide access to boats from the Caledonian Canal to and from Loch Ness. The wide tow paths and pretty lawned areas along the side of the canal provide an ideal vantage point from which to sit and watch the numerous small crafts navigating the lock gates. There is a variety of good cafes and restaurants here, as well as an interesting and unusual selection of small shops. There is a golf course which is open to visitors. Mountain biking is very popular in the area and the recently opened Laggan Wolf Tracks provide some wonderful and stretching downhill runs for all abilities. Boxy's Croft is an ideal base for touring the whole of the Scottish Highlands, with Glen Affric, the Great Glen, Fort William, Fort Augustus, Beauly and Inverness all within easy access.
