Looking out across the hills and mountains with a river valley below, Hill Cottage is set in 8 acres of unspoilt hillside amidst stunning scenery.  This detached former croft cottage has been totally and painstakingly restored by its Highland owners and now offers an exceptionally high standard of modern accommodation whilst retaining many of its unique historic features.  The main room downstairs is open-plan and combines the ultimate in olde world charm with modern living.  An original exposed stone wall, deep-silled windows and an attractive fireplace are complemented by plush deep leather sofas, solid wood floors and a superb modern kitchen with range-style cooker. Upstairs there are two beautifully presented and colour-coordinated bedrooms together with a spacious bathroom with large shower and corner bath.
The garden grounds are fully enclosed (dog owners please note there are very friendly sheep in the area so dogs must be kept under control at all times).  Hill Cottage is in an elevated position with stunning views across the valley or strath below. A path meanders down the gently sloping hillside to the pretty river Kanaird – a lovely place to take a picnic or just enjoy a quiet river stroll along the banks.

About the local area

Hillside Cottage is situated right on the edge of one of the most dramatic and awe-inspiring regions in the Highlands, recently afforded “Geopark” status and now the largest geo-park in Europe.  Here majestic mountains interspersed with pretty lochs make this a climber's and hill walker's paradise.  One of the most famous being Stack Polly but there are also plenty of others to choose from for committed hill-walkers and climbers. The nearby town of Ullapool, just 8 miles away is absolutely charming.  Built as a model town by Thomas Telford, its whitewashed buildings and wide sweeping harbour never fail to impress the visitor.  Seals can be seen bobbing amongst the fishing boats as they unload their catches. There is an excellent selection of restaurants, bistros and small shops along the seafront and boat trips run from the harbour to explore the coastline, including a wonderful pleasure trip out to the nearby Summer Isles.  Ullapool is also the terminus for the ferry to Stornoway in the Outer Isles.  The nearby coastal area of North West Sutherland is renowned for its pristine sandy beaches, ancient settlements and incredible sandstone mountains.  On a trip through the West Coast visitors pass through an area known as Assynt.  Here visitors can explore the Bone Caves (a series of caves and tunnels which have recently been found to contain bones and fossils of long extinct animals, dating back over 4500 years) and the ruins of Ardvreck Castle perched on the edge of Loch Assynt, before arriving in the pretty fishing port of Lochinver.  The nearby white shell beach of Achmelvich is simply stunning.  Canoeing, sailing, body boarding, golf, fishing (sea, river and loch), horse riding, mountain biking, climbing and hill walking are all enjoyed in the area.

Superb cottage in beautiful location. It was a pleasure to stay there and to wake up each morning to the fresh mountain air and sound of the sheep on the croft. It was also a pleasure to make the acquaintance of the owner, Hector and learn of the history of the cottage. Honestly, the best holiday cottage I have stayed in anywhere in the UK!

Wonderful cottage in a spectacular location. I have stayed in many cottages around Great Britain and this is one of the best, congratulations to Scottish Cottages and especially Hector and his wife who should be very proud of this beautiful cottage. I would advise anybody who is thinking of using a cottage in the Highlands do not hesitate, book Hill Cottage. PS My wife wished she could have taken this cottage back home to Derbyshire.

An absolutely beautiful property, beautifully maintained, equipped with everything we needed and more. Lovely welcome from Hector to make sure we knew where everything was and how to use the heating and hot water, but then left to enjoy our holiday. Lovely thick walls keeping the property very cool in hot weather and warm in cold weather. If you want the best, then forget the rest and book Hill Cottage.

The house was of a very high standard and it was located within 8 miles of a large supermarket. It would be difficult to find a more suitable location as a jumping off spot for exploring the region. We will return some day to the same house it was that good.

Hill Cottage has been refurbished to a very high standard and it was a pleasure to stay there. It is in a beautiful part of Scotland, remote, but only about 5 miles from Ullapool, where there are plenty of shops, pubs and restaurants. The cottage is very comfortable and has everything you need, including sky and broadband. Superb !

This cottage was the cleanest and of the highest standard that we have ever experienced. They were delighted. the enclosed garden is excellent for children to play in. the cottage had been beautifully modernised and was spotless. the fittings were of a high standard. The cottage exceeded our expectations
