Thurso

The small town of Thurso has the distinction of being the northernmost town not only in Scotland, but on the British Mainland. Situated on the shore of the Penland Firth, it has some spectacular views out to sea and in the distance you can clearly see the Island of Hoy, one of the Orkney Islands. Thurso has become very popular with surfers due to the turbulent conditions often experienced in the waters of Penland Firth. It also marks the start of one of the most beautiful, but often desolate stretches of road in the British Isles. Starting from Thurso you can drive to Ullapool, a distance of 140 miles, taking in the dramatic north and west coasts of Scotland. Even if you are not going the whole distance, then it is worth driving some way along the road to experience the wonderful scenery and views. The town is pleasant to wander around, with the sea front and Shore Street being particularly worth visiting. All visitors to the town should also make a point of visiting Caithness Horizons, an impressive museum that details the relationship between humans and Caithness both in the past and the present. Other visitor attractions in the town include a glass blowing studio called Glass Creations and for those interested in art, the Swanson Gallery. For those looking to venture a little further afield during their stay in Thurso, then a trip to the nuclear power station of Dounreay is recommended. There is a visitor centre at the station.
