If you have a passion for riding, or maybe have children who love it, or even if you just fancy giving it a go, then you’ll be able to find plenty of opportunities to go horse riding in Scotland; it’s a great way to explore the marvellous Scottish countryside and you can go at your own pace. So whether you’re an expert or novice, young or old, you will be able find a riding establishment that can cater for your needs.

Why not consider pony trekking, suitable for both the experienced or novice rider. Under the correct supervision this is a safe way to explore the countryside. Often under 10s may be allowed on a lead rein and older children who have not ridden before can enjoy a few hours in the saddle in a safe environment. Pony treks can also be organised to cover full days out which can be a real adventure for the whole family.

To get to grips with the basics or to brush up your skills many riding establishments will offer riding courses and you’ll find that disabled riders are also catered for at many riding centres.

Trail riding is for the more experienced where you can gallop, jump and canter your way across the stunning Scottish landscape on horses well equipped for the task, led by a friendly ride leader; an exhilarating way to explore the local area!

Depending on where you’re staying many riding establishments will offer ‘speciality’ rides, which take advantage of the local terrain and environment; for example rides on beaches or rides that follow rivers, rides through forest trails, or maybe even carriage driving!

Before you book your riding experience it’s a good idea to try to ensure that the riding establishment is professionally run and operated by experienced equestrians with all the necessary health and safety procedures in place.
