There are several villages within a few miles of Skellater Cottage offering shops and amenities or you could have a day out in Aberdeen, only 40 miles west, and where you will be spoilt for choice with shops, restaurants and attractions.  This area boasts a wealth of outdoor activities available in unspoilt natural spaces including cycling, pony trekking, golf, salmon fishing in the Rivers Dee and Don (permits available locally) and walking in the Cairngorm mountains or skiing at the Lecht.  A visit to neighbouring Royal Deeside will allow you to brush up on some local history, rub shoulders with royalty at Balmoral or visit some of the many fine castles the area has to offer or you could take a trip over to Speyside, where you are sure to sample a dram at one of the fine malt whisky distilleries. The Moray coast with its unspoilt sandy beaches and pretty fishing villages, make for an ideal day by the sea – you might even be lucky enough to spot a dolphin or a seal!
