The Old Dairy is a former milk parlour just on the outskirts of the lovely little town of Castle Douglas. This semi detached property is ideally placed for an evening stroll around Carlingwark Loch or a shopping day with a difference. Castle Douglas is known as the Food Town with around fifty local businesses either producing or selling high quality local produce for all to enjoy. This area is often referred to as 'the Cornwall of the North' due to Galloway's similar climate as well as over 200 miles of rugged coastline and sandy beaches which are surprisingly often empty! The combination of a land kissed by the Gulf Stream; wildlife galore; artistic colonies; the UK's largest forest and a secret coast lapped by the blue waters of the Solway Firth make this and idyllic holiday destination. The Old Dairy boasts a good central location; from the amazing Colvend Coast with its picturesque villages, to the Galloway Forest Park which is a haven for wildlife. The 'Artists' Town of Kircudbright is close by and with its pretty harbour and colourful High Street it is easy to see why it became an artists' colony. Each of the peninsulas has its own gems on offer; Carrick near Borgue; the Isle of Whithorn on the Machars and Scotland's most southerly point, the Mull of Galloway in the Rhins. The open gardens are glorious and a testament to the mild climate. Logan Botanic Gardens has flourishing plants from the South Seas and Threave Gardens are a mass of colour. The romantic Threave Castle is only accessed by water and a custodian rows you across! The region has many connections with fame from Robert Burns to David Coulthard to Thomas Carlyle and Thomas Telford. The latest acclaim is achieving an award for one of only four places in the World to view the night sky so clearly and you have to travel considerably further to see the other three places as they are all in North America - so bring your binoculars! Visitors also enjoy this area to sample the World class mountain biking at the 7Stanes which is guaranteed to thrill. Laggan Outdoor Centre is also designed for the adrenalin junkies with mountain balling! The Galloway Forest is also a place of great peace and tranquility and has mile after mile of forest tracks, moorland, lochs and challenging hills. It is home to otters and deer and red kites and buzzards and red squirrels and the very lucky may spot a golden eagle!
