There are numerous events which take place across Scotland which celebrate the Scottish and Celtic culture and heritage. The stereotypical symbols of Scotland including the bagpipes, kilts and of course the sport of caber tossing always feature as well as drumming, dancing and exhibitions.
Some of the most popular Highland Games take place in Braemar, Dunoon, Lochearnhead, Pitlochry and St Andrews. A huge part of the events are the competitions between Highland athletes in the Heavy Events. These include caber tossing, stone put (very similar to shot put!), Scottish hammer throwing and Sheaf Tossing (which involves tossing a bundle of straw using a pitchfork!)
The music at all the Highland Games has come to symbolise much of what Scotland is all about. The opening and closing ceremonies feature over 20 pipe bands all marching together creating an electric atmosphere that is not to be missed!
With over 40 Highland Games across the whole of Scotland there is sure to be one close to you so why not visit the Scottish Highlands Games Association website to search for events that might be taking place whilst you are on your cottage holiday!
