This corner of South West Ayrshire is renowned for its unspoilt scenery and particularly mild climate throughout the year. The area is the perfect holiday spot for the outdoor enthusiast. There are excellent golf courses: the world famous Turnberry is only a mile from Maidens and there are also 18-hole golf courses nearby. There are the usual field sports, excellent rivers for fishing and superb routes for walking.
Ayrshire offers a varying coastline with villages, beaches and rocky coves to explore. Inland there is walking, gardens and castles to visit, riding, racing and a choice of golf courses. Culzean Castle (owned by the National Trust for Scotland) is spectacular and is Ayrshire’s most popular tourist attraction. Remodelled by the Scottish architect Robert Adam, it houses a small exhibition displaying President Eisenhower’s military civilian and military career and his association with Culzean. The surrounding country park (extending over 550 acres) has a network of wooded trails passing along the beach. Craft shows, country dancing and walks spotting fungi are attractions hosted during the year. Day trips to Ireland can be taken from Stranraer, whilst a drive north leads to Ayr (14 miles), a traditional seaside town. Glasgow/Prestwick airport is 20 miles.
