About the local area

There are walks in every direction from the front door of the cottage making this the ideal location for all those who love a stroll or more challenging hike through lovely countryside. The beautiful Galloway Hills for example, can be seen from the many windows and the extensive garden of Allanhead, and they offer a range of walking trails 'far from the madding crowd'. The beautiful shore line at Carrick and the lovely sandy beaches of Brighouse and the Doon are a short drive away. Nearby is the picturesque small town of Kirkcudbright with its attractive harbour, castle and artistic connections, including links with the well known "Glasgow Boys". The area has an excellent choice of venues offering the 7Stanes world class mountain biking. However more gentle routes are available over the many miles of forest paths and cycle paths in the area. The region also offers some fine sea and loch fishing and there are a myriad of golf courses for the discerning golfer including those to championship standard. The acclaimed Cream of Galloway is a highly recommended tourist destination for a family day out with a choice of over 30 flavours of organic ice cream to offer to tempt visitors! The climate  is particularly temperate as the region is touched by the Gulf Stream and evidence of this is everywhere from the wonderful plant life to the exotic gardens scattered throughout the area. The Galloway Forest Park is Britain's largest and highly recommended is the Queen's Way, a drive through magnificent scenery providing the opportunity to catch a glimpse of deer, wild goats and buzzards to name but a few. Galloway is one of the few areas remaining in the UK relatively unspoilt and unchanged with breathtaking scenery including picturesque lochs, majestic hills and stunning beaches where it is still possible to see only one set of footprints....yours!
