Step back in time and visit Thornhill, a very individual and charming little town with its ancient lime trees edging the high street. First class butchers sit side by side with stylish boutiques and hostelries where a warming dram awaits. Originally built to house estate workers from Drumlanrig Castle, Thornhill has preserved a distant charm all of its own. Drumlanrig is highly recommended. This many turreted and impressive 17th century castle is open to the public but is still home of the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry. Whatever your interest there really is something for everyone. This is a wonderful location for walking and mountain biking; the Forest of Ae offers world class mountain biking as one of the renowned 7Stanes venues. The River Nith, highly regarded for its salmon, sea trout and freshwater trout, is only half a mile from the cottage, and offers excellent sport for anglers of all abilities. The region is steeped in history from ancient stone circles to romantic castles and unique circular towers. Discover why Sweetheart Abbey got its name, it may surprise you! The only way to visit Threave Castle is to ring the bell for the custodian to row callers across the water! Owing to the calming influence of the Gulf Stream, the winters in this region are surprisingly mild and the climate temperate. For those who step into the Galloway Forest Park, its secrets will be revealed in the form of sparkling lochs, heather clad moorland, challenging mountain walks, amazing forest, elusive wildlife and a wide range of flora and fauna. Galloway Forest is also an astronomers' delight as it has been awarded a 'Dark Sky Park', making it one of the best places in the world to stargaze. For those who hanker after the sights and smells of the sea, there are mile after mile of lovely beaches, some with dramatic seascapes.

Could not have had a better time, Janette (owner) was so helpful, and the welcoming touches she gives the place shine though, making all visitors welcome, from the welcome pack to all the local information leaflets. We highly recommend it, it was outstanding, it was also warm and cosy during the colder evenings of early May.
Fantastic facilities, beautiful location and friendly welcome.
In the event, the cottage turned out to be as good or even better than expected. I really do like a good log fire on a cold evening, and so this was 'top of the tree' stuff for me. Having stayed in quite a few cottages with similar profile, I have to admit that this was the best so far! My thanks to Jeanette who is an excellent host.
