The village of Garlieston was designed in 1760 by the local Lord Garlies. Rope and sailcloth were made in the village hall and the pier was built around 1816 to export local produce and receive tea and lace and coal from abroad. In 1943 the village was a testing area for the Mulberry Harbour effectively used in Normandy during the Second World War.
There is plenty to do in this delightful area of Scotland. Whithorn is a short drive away and is reputed to be one of Scotland's earliest towns and has an active archaeological dig. Wigtown is Scotland’s National Book Town and has many interesting little shops and not all selling books!
For the more adventurous there are several 7Stanes mountain biking venues in the region including Glentrool or Kirroughtree. The mountain biking here is world renowned and not for the faint hearted! The author John Buchan of Thirty Nine Steps fame was not the only romancer to set a story here, Sir Walter Scott did so in Guy Mannering and Marmion and those who explore the area on foot can still taste the romance. The mountains may not be as lofty as those further north but stand atop Merrick on a clear day and the views are stunning and surprisingly devoid of people.
The area around Glentrool is a haven for walkers and for historians alike. The area has a very mild climate as a result of the coastline being touched by the Gulf Stream. This is why the area has so many amazing gardens, the Logan Botanic Garden in particular, which houses semi tropical plants. The shoreline here offers so many opportunities for fishing and paddling and beach combing and for tasty beach barbeques!
Holiday at Anchor Cottage and discover why Galloway in known as one of Scotland’s best kept secrets!
