Description

Arden Cottage in the heart of Galloway is the perfect getaway to explore this undiscovered but accessible corner of Scotland. The cottage is beautifully appointed with every comfort designed to make your stay as comfortable and cosy as possible. Twynholm is well located for exploring the area which really does have something to suit every taste whatever age. The village was home to Formula One Driver David Coulthard and the eponymous museum is a great testament to his success from trophies and race suits to the actual cars David raced. Whilst you are there call in to the Pitstop Diner! The Cocoa Bean Company is just down the road producing hand crafted chocolates. They offer workshops to adults and children where you can immerse yourself in sheer chocolate heaven! The  area is becoming popular with mountain bikers as we host the 7Stanes which offers seriously challenging and world renowned biking at various stunning venues across the region. For those who like less challenging cycling we have mile after mile of quiet sleepy roads edged by colourful hedgerows. Everywhere you look you will see evidence of our temperate climate, from exotic gardens displaying plants from the South Seas, to flourishing palm trees. Dumfries and Galloway is home to a myriad of amazing birds that make the Solway their home after their flights from the frozen north and the RSPB site at Mersehead is one of the best sites to watch them. For golfers there is a choice of around 30 courses across the country from Championship courses to beautiful courses by the sea.

About the local area

The region captures all that is best about walking in Scotland with mile after mile of rugged coastline, quiet sandy beaches, enchanting forests, challenging hill walks, sparkling lochs and so much room to breathe. The Southern Upland Way is one of Scotland's most challenging long distance routes and at 212 miles it is not for the faint hearted but you can choose shorter sections along the way. There are various walking festivals throughout the year with a choice of walks to suit all abilities. It's now official the Galloway Forest Park has just been named as one of the best places in the world to star gaze after picking up an award for the quality of its night skies. There are only three other locations and all in America. No visit to this region is complete without sampling the delights of The Cream of Galloway with mouth watering organic ice cream where one taste will have you wanting more and more. There is also a great activity centre for children of all ages. For adrenalin junkies try mountain balling where you go tumbling down the hill side. Touched by the Gulf Stream with over 200 miles of coastline, rich and luscious countryside, a land full of myths and legends, castles and monuments, the largest forest park in the UK then once you've visited you will understand why we say "haste ye back"
