The vibrant town of Castle Douglas is located in Dumfries and Galloway in south west Scotland. Scotland's designated Food Town, due to the number of independent local businesses selling food and drink, the town also has much in the way of history, wildlife and activities to offer visitors to the area. The area has a rich heritage and there are a number of castles and monuments within easy reach of Castle Douglas. The Neolithic Carin Holy, the 13th century Sweetheart Abbey, the 15th century Cardoness Castle and the 18th century Broughton House are just a few of the historic places to see whilst visiting. There are also a number of activities for children to be found in the area. They can make their own chocolate at the CocoaBean Company Factory in nearby Twynholm. Over at the Cream O' Galloway, they can use up some energy on the bikes, karts, rides and woodland adventure playground. Castle Douglas has many outdoors activities and attractions. There are many sports to try out at the Galloway Activity Centre including canoeing, sailing, archery, orienteering and outdoor laser quest. The Loch Ken Water Ski and Wake Board School offers lessons to amateurs and enthusiasts alike. Those with an interest in wildlife can see over 150 species of animals at the Galloway Wildlife Conservation Park in Kickcudbright or follow the Galloway Kite Trail in Crossmichael and view these spectacular birds in their habitat. Threave Castle and Wildlife Trail offers the opportunity to see kingfishers, barn owls and otters throughout the year and many different swans and geese over the winter months.
