The Gulf Stream flowing in from the north gives the coastline a pleasant climate. The area is steeped in history and the landscape diverse, a haven for artists, birdwatchers, photographers and walkers. Portpatrick lies at the start of the Southern Upland Way, one of Scotland’s acclaimed long distance footpaths. If you wish for solitude and quiet contemplation, the cottage and surrounding area offers quiet bays and places to stare out to sea or while away the hours with a good book. The apartment is only a few seconds walk from the sea and offers a view of the harbour from the patio. Antrim Coastline View is an ideal base from which to tour this super area in particular the coastline north and south of Portpatrick is indented with secluded bays and beaches. Morroch Bay, Sandeel Bay, Lairds Bay and one of the loveliest of them all, Killantringan. The Mull of Galloway is a must with its grass topped visitor centre and is Scotland’s most southerley point with amazing views of Ireland, England, Isle of Man and Scotland! Lucky visitors may spot seals and minke whales and will most certainly see a host of seabirds. The gardens of Dumfries and Galloway are blessed with a climate unusual within Scotland, from the palm fringed west coast to the secluded walled gardens further east. Logan Botanic Gardens has some amazing plants from the South Seas. The area has stunningly beautiful walks for every ability and for those who wish to reach the summits then the Galloway Hills are surprisingly challenging, remote and devoid of people! You will never be at a loss for things to do here whatever the time of year. There are festivals of snowdrops, wildlife, walking, arts and film. Fishermen are spoilt for choice in Galloway from sea fishing in Portpatrick to trout and salmon fishing close by. For golfers Stranraer, Portpatrick and Lagganmore golf courses are all within a 20-minute drive. For adrenalin seekers two of the 7Stanes venues are at Kirroughtree and Glentrool and offer some seriously challenging mountain biking. For those that just want an easy meander there are a myriad of sleepy back roads.
