This Nature Reserve at St Abbs Head is located on the South East coast of the Scottish Borders and is renowned as one of mainland Britain’s largest seabird colonies, which is described in the AA Book of Britain’s Countryside “as perhaps the greatest glory in the Scottish Borders”. The village of St Abbs itself is at its foot and is where a friendly welcome regularly greets visitors. Scramble across the shore to explore the rock pools and perhaps catch a glimpse of the seals at play… Watch the fishing boats return with their daily catch, or take a trip out to sea to fish from boat, rocks or beach. Brown, Blue or Rainbow trout are often caught from the banks or boats in the nearby lochs. A stroll along the cliff top brings you to the golden, sandy beach at Coldingham, where you can surf, ride and take pleasure in the lap of the waves and enjoy the feel of the sand between your toes.....
The historic fishing town of Eyemouth is only 7 miles down the coastline and has a wonderful maritime museum to some restaurants to visit. The elegant Georgian, border town of Berwick, which straddles the salmon-rich River Tweed and where many amenities are available, including a cinema / theatre, indoor swimming and a vast array of shops and restaurants is only 15 miles south. Paxton House, Manderston, Floors Castle and the majestic Bamburgh castle are but a small selection of interesting visitor attractions close by and the tidal island of Lindisfarne (known as Holy Island) can be reached by a causeway, which is safe to cross twice daily.
Golf enthusiasts will delight in the many prestigious courses close by and walkers and cyclists will enjoy the challenge of the Southern Upland Way, which routes through the Lammermuir Hills. The festival city of Edinburgh is only around an hour’s drive (45 miles) north making St Abbs Lighthouse Cottages a unique coastal retreat with easy access to discover the Scottish Borders and north Northumberland alike.
