Grantown-on-Spey is a delightful and thriving Victorian holiday resort.Situated on the wooded banks of the world renowned river Spey, its broad streets are lined with granite buildings. It has an excellent selection of small shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants. The town has maintained its reputation as one of the Highland’s main sporting centres.Fishing permits for salmon and trout can be obtained locally.For the golfing enthusiasts there is an excellent local course, and a further six courses within easy reach. With the Cairngorm mountain range right on the doorstep, skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, hill walking, climbing and horse riding are all available close by. With challenging Munros and the superb water sport lochs of Insh and Morlich, the choice of outdoor sports is almost unlimited. For the less energetic there is a funicular railway that runs up the side of the Cairngorm mountain range at Aviemore, just 20 minutes drive away. Speyside malt whisky is famous throughout the world and Grantown is situated right in the centre of the Whisky Trail - always popular with visitors. The area is also known for its wildlife. Birdwatchers come from miles around to catch a glimpse of rare ospreys that nest in the nearby forest of Abernethy by Boat of Garten.From Grantown excursions north to Inverness and the Black Isle, west to Loch Ness and Fort William or east to Aberdeen and Balmoral are all within a day’s drive.
