About the local area

There are some superb walks direct from the house as well as a lovely beach at nearby Fiscavaig. Although small, Portnalong has some excellent local facilities. Just a few minutes from the cottage is Minginish Community Hall, with a very attractive café providing meals and cream teas. There are a wide variety of events and activities held here, including badminton, ceilidh classes, craft fairs and even a ‘yummy mummy’ toddler group, all open to visitors. There is also a village pub and restaurant open throughout the summer season. The whole region is an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise. Sub-aqua diving and fishing from the pier and canoeing, sailing, and kayaking are all right on the door-step. For those wishing to bring their own boat or kayak, there is a slipway within a few yards of the house. There are numerous places of interest within easy reach. Talisker Distillery is situated just along the road, in the nearby hamlet of Carbost. Here there is also another attractive harbour and boat trips run from the jetty to view seals, porpoises and also the rare sea eagles that nest along this part of the coast. Fishing trips can also be arranged. Dunvegan Castle, seat of the Clan MacLeod since the 13th century and the oldest inhabited castle in Scotland is just a short drive away. Visitors are welcome to wander the beautiful grounds and also take a boat to encounter the seals closer to hand. The beautiful coral beach nearby is also worth exploring. The pretty harbour town of Portree is about 20 minutes’ drive away. Set around its natural harbour, with spectacular hills and mountains beyond, Portree is a quintessentially picturesque fishing village. Brightly painted cottages cluster round the active harbour where some of the finest fish restaurants can be found. There is also an excellent selection of local shops, pubs and other restaurants as well as a superb leisure centre with 25 metre swimming pool, sauna, steam room and table tennis, all available to visitors. Shelduck house provides a spectacular base from which to explore all that this wonderful area has to offer..
