Completed in 1582, Maclellan's Castle was built mainly for show rather than defence and was one of the grandest houses in all of Scotland. It stands in the heart of Kirkcudbright and remains in good condition, providing views out across the village as well as much of the interior with which to display to the public. The kitchens have been recreated to give visitors a real sense of how the castle would have been run at its peak whilst understanding more of the history of the place.

Maclellan's Castle also houses a visitor centre and shop which is well stocked all year round and can be found in the grounds of the castle.
