Loch An Eilein or `Loch of the Island' has several pleasant and gentle paths around the waters edge. Set in Rothiemurchus within one of the largest remaining ancient Caledonian Forests it's a fantastic place to observe birdlife, butterflies, and rare species such as crested tits, Scottish crossbills and treecreepers. A highlight of the walk must surely be the remains of an old castle which sit on an island in the loch which has been home to breeding ospreys in the past.
