About the local area

The stunning Drumlanrig Castle is one of Scotland’s grandest Renaissance buildings. This former stronghold of the Douglas family is now the home of the Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch. Set in 90,000 acres of spectacular grounds, it includes an adventure playground and is well worth a visit. The lively town of Ayr or the mighty city of Glasgow can be reached in just over an hour’s drive. Ayr races are extremely popular and Glasgow offers excellent shopping. Ice cream connoisseurs must visit the highly regarded Cream of Galloway. The Galloway Forest Park has been officially recognized as one of only four places in the world where it is possible to view the wonders of the night sky free from the distorting effects of night pollution. As the bicycle was invented in the tiny hamlet of Keir Mill, it is fitting that this region should be establishing itself as one of the best places to cycle in the UK. This is a paradise for mountain bikers and is the location for several of the internationally famous 7Stanes trails. Nearby Castle Douglas is known throughout Scotland as the Food Town with over 50 businesses involved in producing and selling local food.  Kirkcudbright with its pretty little harbour and brightly painted houses, which nestle along the historic High Street is known as the Artist’s Town and lovely Wigtown is Scotland’s Book Town. Dumfries and Galloway is home to some splendid public gardens and the renowned garden at Threave is no exception.
