The Galloway Forest Park is the UK’s largest and offers superb walking, pony trekking, fishing lochs, superb views and glorious wildlife. The Forest Park achieved the first Dark Sky Park in the UK and the night sky here is spectacular.
Wigtown Bay Local Nature Reserve is the largest in Britain. Migrating Solway Geese and the wetland native birds make this an ornithologist’s dream.
One of the world renowned 7Stanes is a stone’s throw from the cottage and Kirroughtree is home to some of the best single tracks in the country. For lesser mortals the Bargaly Wood trail is a pleasant leisurely rise for first timers, families and children.
The peninsulas of the Machars and The Rhins offer superb beaches, seascapes and cliff top walks. The Mull of Galloway is Scotland’s most southerly point and the views to Cumbria and Ireland are excellent.
