About the local area

The village of Ecclefechan, famous for its mouth watering Ecclefechan Tarts, is birthplace of Thomas Carlyle, the famous essayist, satirist and historian and only a mile away. Grahamsfield Cottage is set within the southern uplands where remote lochs glitter amongst the gentle hills of Annandale and Eskdale. This area has remained virtually unchanged for centuries and is the perfect holiday destination for those seeking rest and relaxation. For those of you seeking more activity the area provides access to some outstanding and beautiful walking; often through miles of unspoilt and peaceful countryside. The Galloway Hills to the west of the cottage offers various bridleways and footpaths for those who enjoy a pleasant stroll or perhaps a more challenging route. Southern Scotland is also well known for its excellent range of mountain bike trails including the internationally acclaimed 7Stanes venues. The area boasts several accredited mountain bike venues including those at Ae Forest and Mabie Forest. For golfing enthusiasts there is a championship golf course at Southerness. Those who prefer a tranquil experience by the loch with fishing rod in hand can visit Lochmaben, which has coarse fishing available on all three of its lochs. Those who enjoy exploring can visit some of the many fortresses and castles in the area. For example, the 16th century watchtower of Hoddom castle and the 15th century Torthorwald Castle are both nearby. The lovely conservation town of Moffat with its ’double’ high street and the delightful town of Dumfries, known throughout the region as the ’Queen of the South’ and the place where the great Robbie Burns spent the last few years of his life, along with the Old Blacksmiths Shop at Gretna, renowned for its romantic connection (and excellent shopping outlet!) are all easily accessible. Dalton Pottery and Art Cafe, close to Lockerbie, is a great day out for the entire family with its delicious home cooked food and the chance for visitors to create their own unique piece of ceramic pottery to take home with them - a wonderful way to create a lasting memory of a stay at Grahamsfield Cottage.
