Squirrel Cottage sits serenely within the historic grounds of Bargaly Estate. The cottage takes its name from the regular sightings of red squirrels seen here. The cottage is the former Lodge house to the Bargaly Estate set in the beautiful Bargaly Glen. Bargaly was once the home of the famous horticulturist Andrew Heron and dates back to 1675. The estate feels like a million miles from anywhere, yet Newton Stewart is within a 5 mile drive. The area is a wildlife haven for deer, red squirrels, and birds and their presence just makes a holiday here feel very special. For fishermen daily and weekly fishing permits can be purchased from the Estate Manager for fishing the estate’s 5½ mile stretch of the Palnure Burn. Shop, pub and restaurant 5 Miles

About the local area

Whether you want a gentle stroll in the area or the challenge of a day’s expedition to the top of the hills of Cairnsmore , the choice is yours.
One of the World renowned 7Stanes is a stone’s throw from the cottage and Kirroughtree is home to some of the best single track in the country. For lesser mortals the Bargaly Wood trail is a pleasant leisurely ride ideal for first timers, families and children.
The 7stanes are seven mountain biking centres spanning the south of Scotland, from the heart of the Scottish Borders to Dumfries and Galloway. ’Stane’ is the Scots word for stone, and at each of the 7stanes locations, you’ll find a stone sculpture reflecting a local myth or legend. Here at Kirroughtree the stone is a gem made from Scottish pink quartz taking its inspiration from the local Creetown Gem Rock Museum.
