Description

Cauldside West Cottage is accessed by a rough track and is tastefully furnished, cosy and warm with gas central heating and a wood burner with logs supplied. It has an enclosed garden with great views of the surrounding country side where both roe and fallow deer are regular visitors, and an outdoor shed for bike storage. Smeaton Estate is a working farm of 450 acres, which is owned and run by the Gray family who live nearby, they have carefully maintained and preserved the natural beauty of the estate as well as working the land. You can enjoy glimpses of farm life from the cottage, which includes a large garden nursery, horses and Highland cows. Adjacent to the cottage are the grounds of the old mansion house with parkland, a lake and arboretum which is part of the National Tree Collection of Scotland. There is also an award winning tearoom, serving home baked cakes on the estate if you fancy a treat!
The peaceful village of East Linton, about a mile away, is within walking distance of the cottage and has several local amenities including two pubs (both serving food), a café, a supermarket with cash machine, local butcher and a chemist. There are two National Trust for Scotland attractions in the village, Phantassie Doocot and Preston Mill, which are well worth a look. Just some 6 miles’ drive away is Dunbar, with a traditional high street with a local baker, fishmonger and butcher as well as supermarkets, local shops and galleries and eateries. The town has a picturesque working harbour where you can watch daily activities and the local boats unloading their catch. It is also home to the beaches of the coastal John Muir Country Park.
Other nearby towns are Haddington, Belhaven and North Berwick, all roughly about 6 to 7 miles away, they all have a good range of local shops, pubs and restaurants. The village of Belhaven is well known for its brewery, which is the oldest working brewery in Scotland, offering tours and sampling, as does the nearby Glenkinchie Whisky Distillery where you can see how Scotland’s national drink is made. For a day out, the capital city of Edinburgh is only 25 miles away and there is a regular train service from Dunbar or Drem to the city centre, taking only 20 minutes, so you can enjoy the city without having to look for a parking space! Ideal for visiting the Edinburgh Festival, the Royal Military Tattoo or just exploring the city. East Lothian has a great choice of golf courses and all in lovely locations such as Gullane, Dunbar and North Berwick. Beach 2 miles. Shop, pub and restaurant 1 mile.

About the local area

The magnificent architecture and unique atmosphere of Edinburgh is known the world over; an elegant sophisticated city that draws visitors from around the globe who come to soak up its rich history and enjoy its ascetic grandeur. Beyond the city, the Lothian countryside provides a beautiful setting of rural towns and villages and miles of coastline with fine sandy beaches.

Edinburgh is Scotland's inspiring capital city which is both very historic and extremely cosmopolitan. The city is perched on a series of extinct volcanoes and rocky crags rising above the rather flat landscape of the Lothians and has a sheltered northern shoreline along the Firth of Forth. The castle dominates the city centre and from its ramparts you can look down on narrow medieval streets, sweeping Georgian terraces and award winning modern architecture. Spend some time in Edinburgh's museums and galleries to learn of the cities fascinating past, or walk down Princes Street for the ultimate shopping experience. The city has no shortage of excellent restaurants, modern contemporary bars and traditional Old Town pubs.

Rural Mid-Lothian is one of the hilliest parts of the region with the Pentland chain to the west and the Moorfoots to the east. Places of interest here include Dalkeith Country Park and Montagu Bridge over the River North Esk, with natural woodland that is home to foxes, deer and a variety of other animals and birds.

East Lothian has forty miles of coastline and picturesque towns and villages that range from traditional seaside towns such as Dunbar and North Berwick to country towns like Haddington, with quaint streets, speciality shops and a good selection of cafés and restaurants. This stretch of coastline from Mussleburgh to Dunbar has plenty of long golden sandy beaches and some very testing top-class links golf courses including Gullane and North Berwick.

Also well worth a visit on this coast is the award-winning Scottish Seabird Centre at North Berwick. Here visitors can watch gannets, puffins, seals and dolphins from interactive cameras and take boat trips to along the coast.
