Gladhouse Reservoir is a designated area of outstanding natural beauty, site of special scientific interest and a special protection area as it is an important roosting site for pink footed Geese and many migratory wildfowl birds. The reservoir is well stocked with wild brown trout and is the largest freshwater area in the Lothians. The three islands on the reservoir can be explored via canoe or kayak. The area has numerous places of interest to visit and all within easy reach of The Small Cottage. The family can also enjoy a day out visiting the Edinburgh Butterfly and Insect World; with its indoor rainforest and large variety of fascinating inhabitants. The nearby town of Peniculk has good leisure facilities including a 25m swimming pool, spa, steam room and sauna. There are wonderful, bustling market town such as Peebles and Galashiels to visit and again all within easy driving distance. Throughout the year there are many and varied events taking place in and around the beautiful city of Edinburgh such as the Royal Highland Show, a fantastic four day event held every June, and the highly acclaimed Edinburgh International Arts Festival and Fringe held every August.
