The Small Cottage is a delightful, detached self catering property which has been newly renovated. Formerly a worker’s bothy, the building dates back over 100 years to when the Gladhouse Reservoir was being constructed. Situated in the small hamlet of Gladhouse next to the reservoir, the cottage enjoys a quiet and peaceful location within Mid Lothian. However, Edinburgh city centre is less than a half hour’s drive away. The cottage lies nestled within a lovely garden containing old Scots Pine trees and red brick lined borders. Inside the cottage there is a welcoming open plan living area comprising a fully fitted and well equipped kitchen, breakfast bar area and lounge space with leather sofa. Patio doors lead out into the garden and a tantalising glimpse of the reservoir through the trees. The master bedroom at the opposite end of the cottage has a luxurious leather framed bed and bi-folding patio doors leading out to a small patio area and a further glimpse of the reservoir beyond. The compact second bedroom has twin beds and is ideal for children. The cottage backs onto open farmland with grazing sheep and views out over the Pentland Hills. It is only a short stroll down to the reservoir itself and there are miles of quiet roads and marked trails to walk and cycle within the surrounding countryside.Shop, pub and restaurant 6 miles.

About the local area

Gladhouse Reservoir is a designated area of outstanding natural beauty, site of special scientific interest and a special protection area as it is an important roosting site for pink footed Geese and many migratory wildfowl birds. The reservoir is well stocked with wild brown trout and is the largest freshwater area in the Lothians. The three islands on the reservoir can be explored via canoe or kayak. The area has numerous places of interest to visit and all within easy reach of The Small Cottage. For example, the UK’s biggest artificial ski slope can be found just off the Edinburgh bypass on the Pentland Hills. The pentlands also offer great walking country. Rosslyn Chapel, a sublime example of 15th century Gothic architecture and made famous through the Hollywood blockbuster " The Da Vinci Code" is only a short drive away. The family can also enjoy a day out visiting the Edinburgh Butterfly and Insect World; with its indoor rainforest and large variety of fascinating inhabitants. The nearby town of Peniculk has good leisure facilities including a 25m swimming pool, spa, steam room and sauna. There are wonderful, bustling market town such as Peebles and Galashiels to visit and again all within easy driving distance. Throughout the year there are many and varied events taking place in and around the beautiful city of Edinburgh such as the Royal Highland Show, a fantastic four day event held every June, and the highly acclaimed Edinburgh International Arts Festival and Fringe held every August. The Small Cottage offers the best of both worlds - a countryside hideaway in which to relax and unwind or a base from which to explore Scotland’s stunning capital city and its wide range of attractions.
